THE WAY WE SEE OURSELVES

‘The way we see ourselves’ looks to 10 contemporary Australian women artists, both emerging and established who use their practice to represent themselves and their experiences.

Throughout history male artists have used women as muses and subjects for their work. As a result the female form has been made passive and stylised by the male gaze. ‘The way we see ourselves’ looks to reframe woman as art subject by reclaiming female representation for women artists.

This exhibition subverts the conventions of femininity by unapologetically embracing the complexities of ones own experience, specifically the experiences of women. Various mediums such as painting, sculpture, drawing and photography convey the nuances of each individual artists expression.

Scenes of the domestic mundane and the surreal simultaneously embrace as if in a daydream, blurring the lines of memory, dreams and experience. Pastel pinks and soft colours blend with dark moody tones reflecting the nature of one’s inner self.

Artists: Jen Ahmad, Gemma Avery, Michelle Cawthorn, Louisa Chircop, Julia Flanagan, Nicole Kelly, Caterina Leone, Kiata Mason, Clare Thackway and Isabelle Wood.
